Oakland University to build new data center on campus — that’s the latest big step for this Michigan university as it pushes forward with smarter technology and expanded research. Using its unique location and strong infrastructure, OU hopes to attract a private partner to develop a modern data hub that can power everything from artificial intelligence to digital learning.
Why Oakland University Has the Edge
One of the biggest advantages Oakland University has for this project is its on-campus DTE substation with a 26-megawatt capacity. This means plenty of power to run servers, cooling systems and the high-tech gear that makes a data center work.
Steven Mackey, the university’s vice president for Finance and Administration, explained that this new facility could unlock major benefits for students and the local economy. By having a dedicated data center on campus, Oakland University will gain the potential for:

Where Will the Data Center Be Built?
The plan is to put the new building on Parking Lot 35, at the southwest end of campus right next to the substation. This spot is perfect because it keeps the data center close to its power source and frees up space in OU’s science complex, where the current data center sits. By moving the old data center, the university can expand its research facilities and support its new artificial intelligence institute.
Strong Industry Interest
According to Mackey, Oakland University has already received interest from 32 companies hoping to partner on this project. For perspective, other big data centers like the Edged Data Centers site in Kansas City cost over $140 million and run on a similar power scale.
The next steps are clear: the consulting firm Brailsford and Dunlavey is reviewing the proposals. By August, OU will pick a partner, finalize the plan and present it to the board of trustees in October.
