Myth vs Fact
Let’s take a look at some of the topics and issues that affect WCPS
WCPS curriculum should be “Pro-American.”
WCPS curriculum should focus on core subjects.
Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) mandates curriculum guidelines. This means they are educational law. The school districts in Maryland must adhere to these guidelines and choose curriculum that aligns with these standards. Non-compliance with the laws could mean loss of state funding for WCPS.
WCPS provides a well-rounded education for the whole child. This means the curriculum not only focuses on the core subjects, but also provides additional education in the arts, technology, music, and more to provide each student with the knowledge and experiences they need to succeed!
In fact, WCPS is exceeding expectations with student academic performance! Check out the links to see just how WCPS continues to improve under the guidance of WCPS administration and staff with support from Board of Education members, including Elena McComas.
WCPS does not protect our girls!
We must keep boys out of girls bathrooms/locker rooms!
US Department of Education amended the Title IX regulations to expand discrimination protection to include gender identity. Released on April 19, 2024, Title IX amendments prohibit discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics, this includes the use of bathrooms and locker rooms
MSDE adheres to the Federal law and provides guidelines of compliance for school districts.
WCPS therefore follows the guidelines required by MSDE and Federal Law.
Failure to adhere to MSDE requirements and Federal law could make WCPS subject to lawsuits and exorbitant legal fees, as well as withholding of Federal and State funding.
WCPS provides private bathroom accomodations to any student upon request. In addition, WCPS teachers and staff monitor hallways and bathrooms to ensure safety for all students.
Also, to be very clear, there are not, never have been, and never will be, litterboxes in the bathrooms in the schools.
WCPS students need to be ready for college and/or careers!
WCPS recognizes that each student has goals and aspirations. That’s why WCPS Adminstration, staff and the Board of Education seek out new opportunities that can provide students a pathway to successful careers!
For example, the WTHS Culinary department opened up the Pines Cafe, which provides restaurant management experience for students.
In addition, the Nest Early Learning Center, a preschool daycare facility provides experience in early childhood education and equips students with earning their Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
WCPS also provides the opportunity for dual enrollment courses that allow students to take college credit classes while still in high school, at no cost to the family. These initiatives are fully supported and applauded by Elena McComas, as a Board of Education member. She knows these programs enable our students to become ready to be successful, contributing members of our community.
WCPS Board of Education has meetings at noon because they don’t want parents to be involved!
WCPS Board of Education schedules the monthly meetings during the school day so that students have the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments! WCPS is able to provide those students with transportation to and from the meeting so that they may receive their accolades.
In acknowledgment of the difficulty for working parents, family members, and community members to attend meetings, WCPS Board of Education holds an evening meeting quarterly. All other monthly meetings are live-streamed and available online, on demand.
